Alice Jane
Saudade
Jan 25, 1922 — Feb 20, 2023
Fall River - Alice Jane (Mello) Saudade, age101, died February 20, 2023 at Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River. She was born on January 25, 1922 in Cambridge, MA to William Mello and Olivia (Ferreira) Mello. She attended Wellington Elementary School and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1939. She was a graduate of Burdett College.
Alice was married to Gil M. Saudade for 35 years before his death in 1975. They had 4 children: Jeanne-Marie Nerwinski (deceased) (husband Lucien), Mary (husband Don Landing) of Addison, VT, Elizabeth (deceased) and Thomas (wife Debbie) of E. Falmouth, MA; and 4 grandchildren whom she loved dearly - Jessica, Jean-Marie, Robin, and Peter. She was also the sister of the late Albert and William Mello.
In the early 60's, Alice and the children accompanied Gil to South America, residing in Chile, Ecuador, and Brazil. Many who knew her loved hearing about the exotic life she led at this time.
During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Alice lived in St. Louis where Gil was a university professor. Upon his death the family moved to W. Harwich, MA to live closer to relatives.
A devout Catholic, Alice was an active member of Holy Trinity Church in Harwich, volunteering in their thrift shop, knitting prayer shawls, and participating in church activities. One year she was the oldest volunteer to assist a Cape CARES dental team in Honduras, serving as a translator, among other duties. She also worked at the Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
An avid golfer, Alice won several "Cranberry Cups" at Cranberry Valley Golf Club in W. Harwich, of which she was very proud. Very creative with hand work, Alice was a prolific quilter (a Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod member) and needle pointer. She has left each of her children, grandchildren, and many extended family members quilts to remember her by, and many pieces of needlepoint.
Alice loved to travel, visiting in her golden years China, Japan, Korea, Peru, Ecuador, Canada, Portugal, the Azores, and various other sites in Europe.
Alice will be most remembered by her love and devotion to family, her fierce independence, her lively personality, and her elegant style.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River.
