Obituary

SOMERSET – Carlos B. Gouveia,  age 86 of Somerset, peacefully entered into eternal rest on December 23, 2025 at home with his loving family by his side. Born in Fenais da Luz, São Miguel, Açores to the late Artur and Maria do Carmo (Pedro Barbosa) Gouveia, Carlos was the beloved husband to Lucia Raposo Gouveia for 58 years.

Carlos spent his younger years in the Acores where he went to school until he was 5 and then helped his father working on the family farm and then later served in the Portuguese Army.  After his time in the military in Lisbon, he returned to Fenais da Luz and started his own cobbler business where he repaired and made shoes.  He took pride in his work but especially when he made Lucia several pair of shoes for when she came to America.  In 1967, he married Lucia at Nossa Senhora da Luz, the same church that Carlos as a young boy rang the bells for when Lucia was baptized.

After Carlos came to America he started his married life in Fall River, MA and worked at the Quincy Ship Yard for General Dynamics helping build LNG Tankers.  He also had many other jobs like working on yachts in the Southeastern MA and RI area.  He retired in 2006 when his first grandchild, Leah, was on the way and then as Evan, Lucas and Noah came along he loved nothing more than to take care of them.  When Colleen married Brian, Carlos took Michaela and Brandan into his heart and loved them like his own.  His grandchildren meant the world to him.  Whatever they needed he was there for them.  There was nothing more important to him than his family.

Carlos and Lucia moved to Somerset, MA in 1972 after building their home and was a long-standing parishioner of Saint John of God in Somerset, MA.  He enjoyed helping during Saturday mass by helping with the collections and would serve mass when necessary.  He also would be part of the annual procession in July and helped to carry the statue of Sacred Heart of Jesus and when he couldn't help carry the statue he would help those who did.

Carlos took great pride in everything that he did and he was a prayerful and faithful man.  It's no surprise that he went to eternal rest near the birth of his Lord and Savior.  He prayed several times a day for not only his family, but for people who asked for prayer, for people he met, and for his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.  He always put prayer first in his life and he was the first to teach his grandchildren how to pray specifically how to pray the rosary.  He loved his family more than anything and was the happiest when his home was filled with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife Lucia, Carlos is survived by his two daughters Colleen Dunn (husband Brian) of Somerset, MA  & their children Michaela, Brandan, Leah, & Lucas and Jennifer Abramo (husband Sebastian) of Somerset, MA & their children Evan & Noah all of Somerset; His sisters Maria Machado and Isabel Sousa both of Fall River; many nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, Carlos was predeceased by his siblings Domingos Gouveia, Conceicao Pereira, Jose Gouveia, Maria Aguiar, and Maria do Carmo, Soares.
