Charles
Owens
Mar 22, 1945 — Apr 15, 2026
New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD- The world lost a bright light with the passing of Charles R. Owen, age 80, who passed away on April 15, 2026, at Brandon Woods Nursing Center. Born in Orange, Texas, he was the son to the late Charles Owens and Viola (Rougeau) Owens.
He was the kind of man who never quite fit into a single story, and that was exactly the point.
For nearly two decades, he worked the oil fields, learning the rhythms of West Texas the hard way—long days, rough hands, and a respect for the land that never left him. Before that, he had been a football player at the University of Texas, where teammates knew him as tough, disciplined, and quietly driven.
But it was his mind that set him apart. A natural mathematician, he went on to teach at Harvard and MIT for five years, earning a reputation as both brilliant and unconventional. Students remembered not just his intellect, but the way he made difficult ideas feel almost inevitable, as if numbers themselves were telling a story.
He never lost his roots. In the fall, you could find him hunting doves in West Texas, moving through the brush with the same patience he brought to a chalkboard. And wherever he went—lecture hall, oil field, or open country—he was rarely without his cowboy hat, a small but constant reminder of where he came from.
He was, by any measure, a genius. But more than that, he was a man who lived fully in every chapter of his life, unafraid to cross boundaries between worlds that rarely meet. He survived by his daughter Kelly Owens and sister Sharon Rougeau.
Private arrangements were entrusted to the care of Manuel Rogers Funeral Home 1521 N. Main St. Fall River.
