Derek
Tavares
May 23, 1961 — May 18, 2026
SOMERSET - With profound sorrow, we share the loss of Derek Tavares, who passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2026 at the age of 64. Born in Fall River, he was the son of Barbara Tavares (Alves) and the late David Tavares Sr.
Derek dedicated many years of his life working as a supervisor at Brayton Point Power Plant, where he took pride in his work and earned the respect of coworkers through his leadership, and dependable nature. He recently took on the role as the President of the Somerset Progressive Club where he was a dedicated member for many years. Derek also enjoyed 15 years of service to the Somerset Berkley Softball League. He was a staple of the "Snack Shack" at Ashton Field and treasured the league, the people involved in it, and the players.
He also had a deep love for Harley-Davidsons and found freedom and peace on the open road, the rumble of his bike matching his adventurous, outgoing spirit. Riding was never just a hobby to him — it was a way to connect with others, create memories, and enjoy life to the fullest. Derek also enjoyed working at Ashton Field where he ran the day-to-day operations and coordinated girls' softball games.
Above all else, Derek cherished his daughter's, Kylie and Amanda, and granddaughter, Macie. They were his pride, his purpose, and the center of his world. He loved spending time with family, celebrating life's simple moments, and surrounding himself with laughter, friendship, and love. His warmth, loyalty, and steady presence touched everyone who knew him.
In addition to his daughter's, granddaughter and mother, Derek leaves behind his siblings, David Tavares Jr. (wife Kristyn), Lynn Cree (husband Bruce) and Dean Tavares; nieces Jessica Cree and Meghan Scobey (husband Dana) and nephew David Tavares III.
Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the stories shared by loved ones, time spent with friends, and the lasting love he gave so freely. His legacy is one of kindness, family, friendship, and a life fully lived.
Derek's funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River on Saturday, May 23rd at 8:45 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John of God Church at 10:00 AM. Calling hours on Friday, May 22nd from 4-8 PM.
Those who are motorcycle riders are encouraged to take one last ride with Derek and lead him in the procession to church on May 23rd. Immediately following church, the procession will be taking an honor drive by the Somerset Progressive Club.
