Fall River

Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gil R. Coimbra, who left this world on February 15, 2025, at the age of 75. He was at home, surrounded by the love of his devoted family, after a courageous battle with cancer. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Gil leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering dedication to those he cherished.

Gil was the husband of Felicidade "Felicia" (Noversa) Coimbra, with whom he shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Born in São Roque (Ponta Delgada), São Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Narciso and Angela (Marcelino) Coimbra.

Gil was passionate about soccer, both as a skilled player and a devoted fan of Porto Soccer Club. He played for many years with Marítimo Juniors de Ponta Delgada in the Azores before continuing his passion for the game in the United States with the Portuguese/American Soccer Club of New Bedford. In Fall River's North End, Gil was the proud owner and operator of Coimbra's Fish Market for many years. Outside of work, he loved fishing and traveling, especially to Canada, Virginia Beach, and Florida to visit loved ones. Above all, nothing brought him greater happiness than time spent with his family, whom he adored with all his heart.

Along with his wife, Felicidade, he was loved and cherished by many people including his children Paul Coimbra (wife Natalie) of Fall River and Joyce Sunderland (husband Bill) of Assonet; and his grandchildren, Brandon Coimbra, Hannah Sunderland, Brady Sunderland, and Kameron Coimbra. His legacy will not only live on with them, but with his dear sisters Adriana Marcelino, Lydia Freitas, Luisa Silva, and Maria Goretti Lussier, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him deeply.

Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate Gil's life. His funeral will take place from Manuel Rogers Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, on Saturday, February 22nd, at 9 A.M., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church at 10 A.M. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 21st, from 4-7 P.M.
