Irene (Demoura
Cabral) Joaquin
Sep 24, 1927 — Jul 20, 2025
Port Orange
Irene Joaquin (DeMoura Cabral) passed away peacefully. Born in Raynham, MA, she lived in Fall River and later Port Orange, FL. A proud ILGWU seamstress who championed workers' rights, she later earned her GED and served with dedication at the Fall River Police Department.
Irene was a resilient, generous, and socially minded individual who embraced her faith. She loved her family beyond compare and was a caretaker at heart. She loved her menagerie of pets throughout the years. She enjoyed life to its fullest. Some joys were dancing to big band music, travel, books & movies, cooking & gardening, seaside walks, bowling, boating, and lively card games. Late nights often found her with a cup of tea and a game of solitaire. A devoted patron of her local library and supporter of community outreach programs she believed in lifelong learning and respecting all viewpoints.
Irene reflected about leaving high school to help support her mother and siblings. She spoke highly of her teachers and the joy of learning. She fondly recalled striking out batters as a teen softball pitcher during WWII company games and USO danceathons, Big Apple jaunts to the Christmas Nativity with her mom & sister, and family gatherings with her in-laws, their fado music & harvesting of wine grapes, and the many neighborhood block parties.
Irene leaves behind a loving family. Her children RoseAnne (Jo) , Anne Marie (Robert), Joseph (James) and their spouses. Also, her grandson Eric & wife (Cheryl), great grandchildren - Sydney Rose and Gabriel, cousins, nieces & nephews. Irene was pre-deceased by her parents, sister, brothers, former husband Joseph, and longtime companion Armand.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Fall River Jewish Nursing Home and South Coast VNA.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church at a later date, with a family gathering to celebrate her life this fall.
In lieu of flowers, donations of time or treasure may be made in Irene's memory to a local public library or favorite charity. You may leave a sympathy message to the family and light a candle in honor of Irene below.
