Obituary

James P. Stroke, P.E., age 90, of Naples, Florida, and formerly of Somerset, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Johnson City, New York, James was the beloved husband of Nancy (Farias) Stroke and the son of the late Elmer Stroke and Mary (Knapp) Stroke. He was predeceased by his son, Mark Stroke, USMC, and his sister, Emilie Larson.

James earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a private research university in Troy, New York. He went on to build a successful and rewarding career as a professional engineer, working for Stone & Webster and other engineering firms. Licensed in several states, James eventually established his own consulting business, a testament to his knowledge, dedication, and professional expertise.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, James found joy in life’s simple pleasures and in the things he loved most. He enjoyed playing the piano, fly fishing, reading, playing chess, collecting coins, and working on his daily crossword puzzles. He was a thoughtful, gentle, and kind-hearted man who treasured time with his family. Fair and principled, James lived with integrity and had a deep appreciation for nature and the world around him. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved pets. Those who knew him will remember his quiet warmth, his many interests, and the love and care he brought to the lives of those closest to him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

James leaves behind his devoted wife, Nancy, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and memories; his daughters, Lori Stroke of Naples, Florida, and Stacy Riseman and her husband, Micah Imparato, of North Attleboro, Massachusetts; his sister, Helen Paxton of Charlotte, North Carolina; and his cherished grandchildren, Mark Stroke II, Ashley Marie Bellavance, Jackson Riseman, Emerson Riseman, and her twin brother, Benjamin Riseman. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. His family will forever treasure the memories they shared with him and the lasting imprint of his love in their lives.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for James at Our Lady of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, South Street, Somerset, on Monday, November 2, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Somerset.
