Obituary

Janice E. (McMullen) Sears, 82, a longtime resident of Somerset, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Janice was the beloved wife of the late Gerald A. Sears Sr., and the cherished daughter of the late Raymond A. McMullen and Gilda S. (Netto) McMullen. She was also predeceased by her sister Barbara Welker and brother Kenneth McMullen.

She is survived by many devoted family members and close friends, including her loving son and caregiver Gerald A. Sears Jr. and his wife Pamela of Somerset; her adored granddaughter Mia Lin Sears; her brother Raymond A. McMullen Jr. of Florida; and sister-in-law Janet McMullen of Somerset. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews: Kristen Raposa (husband Bill), Hayley Carreiro, Beth Cabral (husband Louis), Glen Welker (wife Dee), and Kenny McMullen (wife Angela), along with great-nieces and nephews Kaitlyn Raposa (fiancé Jordan Lopes), Justin and Camryn Cabral, and Julia and Alyssa McMullen.

Janice held a deep pride in the accomplishments of all the children in her family and shared a special bond with Autumn DeSa, whom she cared for as an infant and continued to support through the years.

A 1962 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Janice worked for many years at the Fall River Gas Company and later retired from Advanced Looseleaf Technologies in Dighton. She enjoyed traveling, particularly memorable trips to Hawaii, Florida, and Disney with her family. She and her husband also made treasured memories visiting Cape Cod and New Hampshire using their timeshare.

Janice was known by many names—"Mom" to her son and daughter in law, "Jan" to her siblings and friends, "Auntie" to her nieces and nephews, and "Nai Nai," a cherished title given to her by her granddaughter Mia, honoring Mia's Chinese heritage. Of all the roles Janice held in life, being "Nai Nai" brought her the greatest joy.

Her son Jerry and daughter in law Pam would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many family members who took time to visit and share stories, laughter, and support in Janice's final days. Sincere appreciation also goes out to the friends who called or came by, offering comfort and companionship.

Special thanks are extended to the compassionate team on Atwood 2 at Charlton Memorial Hospital—nurses, CNAs, and doctors—who helped keep Janice comfortable, lifted her spirits, and treated her with dignity and warmth. Deep gratitude is also given to the Southcoast Health at Home (formerly Southcoast VNA) hospice and palliative care team, especially nurses Mary Jo and Katie and CNAs Theresa and Brenda, who helped fulfill Janice's wish to remain at home, surrounded by those she loved most.

As Janice wished, please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to Southcoast Health at Home either online at https://www.southcoast.org/at-home/donate/ or by mail. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
