FALL RIVER - Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to Joao "Couvinha" Miranda DeArruda, age 80, who passed away peacefully at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Germana (Pereira) DeArruda. Born in Remedios Britanha, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açores, to Manuel Guiomar DeArruda and Eteliva (Pacheco) DeMiranda.

Joao, affectionately known as "Couvinha," earned his nickname from his deep love for gardening and farming. He was a man of simple joys and a heart full of humor. He could often be found starting his day with a coffee at the Portuguese Athletic Club called Lindos, a place where he felt right at home. Couvinha found joy in life's simple pleasures: the thrill of scratch tickets, the satisfaction of tending to his plants, and indulging in his favorite treats — whoppers and banana splits, which he lovingly called "big burgers" and "banana boats". He was a very proud Portuguese veteran of the Air Force, having served his country with honor until his honorable discharge in 1967. Joao's presence will be greatly missed, but his love for life, his family, and the earth he tended will always be remembered.

He was loved and cherished by many people including his children Rita Rapoza of Taunton, Teresa Maloney of Fall River and Paulina Richardson of Fall River; grandchildren Chad, Amber, Alisha, Kendra and Logan; great-grandchildren Hayden, Chloe, Jonas and Isabella; as well as 11 siblings and many nieces and nephews.
