Fall River

Obituary

Jovina "Jenny" Fernandes, age 95 of Fall River, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at Somerset Ridge Center with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph S. Fernandes Jr. and the daughter of the late Joseph Correia and the late Maria (Souza) Correia. Jenny was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen F. Fernandes, and her son James Fernandes, brothers Herman & James Correia, and sister Mary Cordeiro.

Jenny was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose greatest joy in life was caring for those she loved.

Prior to retiring, Jenny worked as a sewing machine operator for both Shelbourn Shirt Co. and Pleasant Novelty Co.

Jenny was the heart of her family. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The years she spent caring for her grandchildren were among the happiest of her life. She relished every moment with them and created a home filled with warmth, comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

A gifted cook, Jenny expressed her love through food. Family gatherings were made special by her famous roasted chourico and potatoes and her beloved meatball stew. Her grandchildren fondly remember gathering around her kitchen table for fried bologna sandwiches, special waffle breakfasts, and countless homemade meals. She loved watching her family enjoy the dishes she prepared and took great pride in creating delicious recipes from the simplest ingredients.

Jenny was also remarkably creative and talented. She enjoyed participating in and attending craft fairs at St. Michael's Church and had a gift for turning ordinary materials into beautiful treasures. Family members still cherish the handmade remote-control holder pillows she lovingly created and gifted one Christmas. She also spent countless hours making cheerleading bows for her granddaughters' cheerleading teams, ensuring each child felt special and remembered.

She enjoyed life's simple pleasures. Jenny loved sitting on her porch, visiting with neighbors, and watching the world go by. She never met a stranger and treated everyone she encountered with kindness, warmth, and compassion. She was truly one of the most selfless and generous people anyone could ever know. Though she came from humble beginnings, she always found ways to give whatever she had to others.

Her family will forever remember the many thoughtful gestures that defined her love. When her grandchildren stayed overnight, she would warm their bath towels before they stepped out of the tub so they would be cozy and comfortable. She sang "Tiny Bubbles" during bath time, creating memories that her grandchildren carried with them throughout their lives. No one could walk through her front door without immediately being offered a "nice glass of soda."

Jenny found joy in every holiday, no matter how small. She made sure her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren always received a small gift or token of her love, wanting each of them to know they were thought of and cherished.

She enjoyed listening to music and had a deep appreciation for a good sound system. Her favorite artists included Patsy Cline, Engelbert Humperdinck, Daniel O'Donnell, Lawrence Welk, and Don Ho. She also loved watching movies, especially Titanic and The Sound of Music.

Jenny took tremendous pride in her appearance and her home. Family members can easily picture her sitting in her favorite spot on the far-left side of the couch, carefully putting in her hair curlers. Looking her best was important to her, as was maintaining an immaculate home. Not a day went by that she did not clean from top to bottom, taking pride in every room and every detail.

She looked forward each year to cherished traditions, including annual beach trips with her late brother James and her grandchildren, where they spent hours collecting periwinkles and lapas along the shore. She also enjoyed yearly trips to the Christmas Tree Shops on Cape Cod, making memories that her family will treasure forever.

Jenny's favorite breakfast was a simple cup of coffee and a piece of massa. Like so many aspects of her life, she found beauty and joy in life's simplest moments.

More than anything, Jenny will be remembered for the love she gave so freely. She was the purest of souls, a woman whose kindness knew no limits and whose family was her entire world. Her legacy lives on in every family recipe, every handmade treasure, every holiday tradition, every warm towel after a bath, every song sung from memory, and every act of love inspired by her example.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Jenny is survived by her son David Fernandes and his wife Kim of Swansea, 6 grandchildren Jennilyn Fernandes, Jaime Borden (husband Doug), Joshua Fernandes, Kaylee Fernandes, Alyssa Aubut (husband Chris), and Jessica Rapoza (husband Chad), 10 great grandchildren Brody, Emma, Evan, Celina, David, Nickolas, Lily, Josie, Makenna, and Hayden, as well as many nieces & nephews.
