Obituary

Tiverton-  Mae (Shackleton) Charos, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023.  Mae was born on May 31, 1931 to Joseph and Fanny (Jackson) Shackleton of Fall River Massachusetts.  She was the second youngest of nine children and the last of the siblings to pass away, being predeceased by Grace, Doris, William, Ruth, Jane, Joseph, Charles and younger sister Betty.

She was a pretty, auburn-haired girl who attended Durfee High School and was a proud cheerleader for the Durfee Hilltoppers.   It was during her junior year that she met her future husband Gus Charos.  They were married on April 1, 1951 and would have celebrated their 72 rd wedding anniversary next month.

Their first son George Scott (Rae, children Caitlin Mae, George Eric and Arianna Marie) was soon joined by son Augustus (Shirley, children Augustus Angelo, Ashley Julia) and Glenn William (Sandra, children Kimberly Nicole, David Alexander and Amanda Danielle) residing  on Pleasant Street in Fall River.  With the addition of son John Joseph (Patricia) the family settled on Summerfield Avenue in Somerset.  Mae kept a tidy home and created order among 4 active boys.  She loved to garden, planting fruit trees and tending to her rose bushes.

Mae and Gus were active in the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Fall River and also very socially engaged with their Romeo & Juliet group of friends.    If there was an event, Mae would be there in fine spirits and always fashionable – whether it was a dance at the church or a fundraiser – often attending with her in-laws Catherine Charos,  Mary and Angelo Roucanos.

Mae worked as a Ward secretary in the Fall River Hospital for a time.  She also worked at Olivera and Associates as a Real Estate agent.  She often spoke of her time in sales at Anderson Little.

She was in constant motion.  Always keeping busy and ready to take on outing or adventure.  Mae traveled extensively with her husband and in-laws to Greece and Europe.   She was willing and able to take a 22 hour flight with her infant son John to visit her sister Betty in California.  She famously came home blond and remained so for the rest of her years.  She would drive to Connecticut, Maine or Vermont to visit family, packing the boys up if only for a short stay.  Mae traveled with her sister Betty throughout Europe over the years.  Because they also kept a home in Cocoa Beach, Florida, Mae was able to enjoy many happy times with her sisters and extended family.

Family connection was very important to Mae, a trait she instilled in all her sons. She and Gus would make summer vacations in South Carolina with Mae's brother Charles and his family, resulting in many happy memories.    The family often visited with Mae's nephew Hubert Hopkinson and wife Ruth which created enduring bonds among their children.    She was known as "the fun aunt" and the 'glamorous auntie' whom the cousins looked forward to being with at any gathering.

She valued education and proudly attended the many graduations of her 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren Samuel Elias and Sophia Elizabeth Charos.

Mae had a stroke several years ago but stubbornly fought to regain her strength and physical ability.  She was remarkably strong and strong-willed.  She was still able to communicate her love and laughter with her family and visitors.  She was very grateful for the attention of her grandchildren and great grandchildren..  She adored having them around.

Mae will be remembered as a dad's sweetheart, a woman with traditional values and a deep love of family, children and animals.
