WESTORT- Maria de Lourdes (Sousa) da Luz, age 84 of Westport, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024 in the comforts of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in São Vicente Ferreira, São Miguel, Azores, Maria was the daughter of the late Jose de Almeida Sousa and the late Guilhermina (de Sousa) Sousa, and the beloved wife of Gilberto Manuel Da Luz of Furnas, São Miguel, Azores for 54 years. They would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 29th.

Prior to retiring, Maria worked as a garment presser for the former Beacon Garment Co. in Fall River, and she was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. In her free time, Maria loved participating with her prayer groups from church, cooking & baking for her family, listening to the radio, going for walks, being outside tending to her flower gardens, traveling by car, talking to family & friends, crocheting in her younger days, eating sweets (especially cookies), taking care of her grandchildren, and always by her husband's side, whom she adored. Most of all, Maria loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Gil, Maria is survived by her daughter, Ana da Luz Pacheco (husband Peter) of Fall River; and her son, David da Luz (wife Sarah) of Dartmouth; sister, Lucia Quental (husband Eugene); and her brother, Jose de Almeida; 4 grandchildren, Emily, Chloe, & Thomas Pacheco, and Aria da Luz; godchildren, nieces & nephews. Maria was the sister of the late Maria Sousa and Eduarda Sousa.

Visitation for Maria will take place on Wednesday, June 12th from 8-9:30 A.M. in the Manuel Rogers Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Michael's Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
