Obituary

TAUNTON - We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Maria Judite (Freitas) Melo, age 90, who was born on April 27, 1935, in Flores, Azores. She passed away on July 15, 2025 at Marion Manor Skilled Nursing Center in Taunton. She was the beloved wife of Jóse Antonio Melo. Born in Lages, Flores, Açores, she was the daughter of the late Jóse and Maria Isabel (Alves) Freitas.

She was a talented and hardworking woman who spent many years working as an assembler for Datel Inc. Deeply rooted in her Portuguese heritage, she was a proud member of the choir at Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton, MA, where she also played the organ for many years, bringing beauty and devotion to every service. Her love of music echoed throughout her life, from church hymns to family gatherings. She had a gift for sewing and often made clothing for her loved ones with great care and creativity. A wonderful cook, she was especially known for her rice pudding, a beloved treat she prepared with love each Easter, and her traditional Portuguese biscoitos, which she generously shared with family. Above all, she cherished raising her grandchildren, who brought her the greatest joy. Her warmth, generosity, and nurturing spirit will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Maria was survived by her children: John Melo (wife Staci Ann) of Raynham and Raul Melo (wife Maria Nazare) of Taunton; grandchildren: David Joseph Melo (Wife Christina), John Antony Melo, Veronika Melo; Great-grandchildren: Aiden Melo and Collin Melo; siblings: Morris Freitas, Joe Freitas, Assiss Dubray, Teresa Gomes, Patricia, Louisa Freitas.
