FALL RIVER - With heavy hearts, we announce that Maria M. Sousa, age 85, formerly of Somerville, MA., passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose Freitas Figueiredo. Born in Santa Maria, Açores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Sousa and Emilia (Moreira) Moreira.

Maria dedicated many years of her life working as a folder at a curtain factory before retirement. She found great joy in helping at the family store, Cross Street Market in Somerville, MA, where she spent time alongside her daughter. Maria was known for her incredible cooking—her malasadas, biscoitos, and torresmos were nothing short of legendary and brought happiness to all who tasted them. Above all, she cherished time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. If there is a heaven, surely Maria is there now—at peace, and surrounded by the same love she so freely gave in this life.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Mill Brook Rehabilitation Center and Southcoast VNA, with special thanks to Ashley, Sharon, and Tina, whose care and friendship meant so much. As well as Charlton Memorial Hospital Wound Care Department, with special appreciation to Dr. Gerald Monchik and his staff, for the compassionate care and support shown to Maria.

She is survived by her children Aida Andrade (husband Henry) of Fall River, Ines Andrade (husband Tony) of Stoneham, Jose Figueiredo (wife Berta) of New Bedford and Alice Moreira (husband Jose) of Acores; grandchildren Kelly, Jason, Dany, Cristina and David Andrade, Diane and Filipe Figueiredo, Valdo and Vania Moreira; as well as 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Alex Andrade and siblings Antonio, Manuel, Jose Maria, Joao and Jose Antonio Sousa.

A visitation for Maria will be held on Thursday, July 31st from 8:30-10:30 A.M. in the Manuel Rogers Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River. A funeral mass will follow in Holy Trinity Church at 11:00 A.M. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery.
