Peggy June
Carvalho
Jun 18, 1937 — Jul 26, 2024
Peggy June Carvalho; "Peg", "Mom", "Nana", left us too soon on July 26, 2024 at the age of 87 in Somerset Massachusetts. Mom was the smartest person in every room she was in, with a fierce wit, kind smile, ready laugh and unbounded love for her husband, children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Peggy was born on June 18, 1937, in Springfield, Illinois to James and Marion Powers. She had 7 siblings, Jackie, John Henry, Jimmy, Tyrone, Judy, Peter and Tommy. After high school in 1955 Peggy joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Westover Air Force base in Springfield, Massachusetts where she met the love of her life, Arthur Carvalho. Peggy and Art were married on September 2, 1957. Peggy left the Air Force in 1958 to raise what she was later surprised to learn would be a family of seven children: Meg, Beth, Skip, Teresa, Anne, Lisa and Jay. This clan, while large, took shape quickly as Peg and Art wasted no time with the business of bearing children: the seven were born within 9 ½ years, including two sets of Irish twins. Peggy and Art raised these children in two countries and six Air Force bases as Art pursued his career in the Air Force. In 1973 Peggy and Art settled the family in Somerset Massachusetts and Peggy cared for the clan while Art served a 1- year tour of duty in Thailand and a 2-year tour in Delaware. After Art returned, Peggy decided to put her prodigious intellect to use. She enrolled in Bristol Community College in 1976. Two years later she graduated first in her class with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in accounting. Armed with her degree, Peggy immediately found a job as an accountant at Gold Medal Bakery where she enjoyed a fulfilling 22-year career, ultimately running the business office with a large staff. She retired in 1999 to enjoy a snow-bird life with Art, spending summers in Massachusetts and winters at their golf course home in Foley, Alabama.
Peggy's legacy is her family – all of whom have been shaped by her unconditional love, compassion, intelligence and humor. She leaves behind Art, her husband of 67 years, her 7 children and their spouses: Greg Brien, Bob Pierce, Shawn Carvalho, Dean Maia, Keith Higginbottom, Ronny Alves and Kiangsi Yee Carvalho; 19 grandchildren: Cory, Kelsey and Josh; Serene, Justin and Victoria; Elizabeth and Jillian; Vaughn and Stephanie; Sydney, Zachary, Haley and Chloe; Amanda and Alissa; and, Boston, Talon and Jazlyn; 13 great-grandchildren: Isla and Andie; Blakley and Zoey; Greyson, Arrow and Reia; Jackson and Liv; Logan; Austin; Madisyn; and Easton, with Victoria and Boston expecting any day; her brothers Tommy and Tyrone, her sister Judy; her sister-in law Emma; and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed.
